Fence Replacements

A desire for privacy away from prying eyes, securing a boundary or the need to repair damaged panels usually results in a quick decision to install a new fence.  But being too hasty can result in the wrong choices being made.  Simply choosing a fence style is not easy. All too frequently people opt for straightforward larch lap type fencing because it is the most common type.  There are lots of different types such as lap fences, closeboard, rails, wavy edged, hazel hurdles and willow weaves.  Some types may be more suitable to your property than others. You need to consider style and colour as well as the need for security.    Size too can make a difference.  A desire for privacy can often result in installing too tall fence panels but if your garden is exposed to the wind, then you may find that these are more prone to wind damage during storms.  It can also lead to problems with neighbours. This is certainly something that we can advise you on.  You can easily find yourself breaching legal covenants and restrictions, incurring legal expenses and eventually having to replace the fence yet again.  It may be you are not even responsible for the fence.  Who owns your fence? Is it you or your neighbour?  Many home owners have little knowledge of just what their responsibilities are with regard to property boundaries.    Some housing estates have restrictions as to the type of boundary markers that can be used at the front of properties, requiring an almost open plan layout.    Before taking any action to replace or install a fence, it is wise to check your deeds and identify exactly what you can or cannot do.  Talking to a local hard landscaping company such as C&J Landscapes Ltd will be beneficial.  Their in-depth knowledge of the area means that they will frequently already know what can and cannot be done with fences in your area. This can reduce the research time and avoid potential problems. Talking to the experts and seeking their help can be a much better longterm option than just choosing an off the peg fence and hoping it works. Using a specialist ensures that the fence matches your legal responsibilities, personal style and is installed safely and securely with minimum disturbance to you and your neighbours. Garden Fencing – DIY versus a Professional.

Installing a fence sounds easy – after all, what could be simpler than digging in a few fence panels. But is it? All too frequently, DIY attempts to install a fence result in a quick call to the professionals! It is not hard to see why this happens. Garden fencing requires a lot of skill and care to be installed correctly and safely. For most DIY’ers the risks of getting it wrong are very high. Buying a cheap fence from a DIY store can result in damage, problems with neighbours, and lack of security. If badly fitted, it is likely to fall down as soon as bad weather occurs. There are so many advantages to using a fencing contractor. They will help you choose the best fence for the purpose. A fencing contractor can advise on style, security and the most appropriate height. This is very important. If you install a fence that is too high, then neighbours will complain about losing their light and can order that it is taken down – a costly mistake. Fencing contractors know the law and what can be done. Measuring the boundaries needs to be done with care. Get it wrong and you could find yourself buying too much or too little. Uneven or sloping sites will require extra care since it may require the use of stepped panels. Fences have to be secure, which means correct installation is important. Fence posts need to be encased in metal or concrete to prevent rotting, and the individual panels should fit tightly. Accidents are all too common if care is not taken when installing fences. Mallets and hammers can hit the wrong thing (or worse still a person). No one wants to be rushed off to hospital. Fence panels are bulky and cumbersome. More than one person is needed to hold and secure them in place. There is little doubt that fencing contractors can do the job much faster than you can do yourself. They will advise on the most appropriate fencing to use, install it safely and securely. Skilled workmen mean that the potential for accidents is decreased significantly – they have been trained to do the job. They will have all the tools that needed, the extra hands to make sure that it is completed safely from start to finish. Using a contractor also means that the fence and the work are guaranteed, enabling you to rest easy knowing that your property is secure. Garden Fencing in Winter

As winter fast approaches, plants die back in the garden leaving garden fencing exposed and in full view. This makes the perfect time to carry out maintenance and consider changes to your design. Often forgotten until it is too late, garden fencing can make a tremendous difference to the appearance of your garden. Wooden fences are the most common. Easily erected, they blend with any environment. But it is worth considering what else you can do with them. Trend setting landscape designers have been experimenting with new trends. Instead of putting fence panels vertically – why not consider placing them horizontally? The result is quite stunning. Horizontal lines can make the garden look much longer because they trick your eyes into elongating the available space. Make it even more stunning by painting the fence in broad horizontal stripes. It does not have to be in bright shades, you can achieve an unusual effect by varying the shades. Try a darker shade at the bottom of the fence, and gradually lighten it towards the top. This helps give a feeling of space, which can be very important in a small garden. Adding a trellis on top of the fence will increase your sense of privacy. Instead of opting for the standard flat trellis, it is worth considering the effect of a wavy trellis as this can look very classy and eye catching. One of the most unusual trends in fencing has been the introduction of shou-sugi-ban style boards. A Japanese concept which is beginning to spread into the west, shou-sugi-ban involves the art of making charred wood. This creates a slightly mysterious impression due to the use of much darker wood. Depending on the degree of burning involved, the wood can be slightly scorched or almost black. This is definitely not something for the DIY’er – you do need a skilled installer! Apparently, shou-sugi-ban fences are very long lasting with a life span of up to 30 years. Whatever your style of fencing, make sure that it is secure and firmly fixed in place. Strong winds and floods can wreck havoc on any fence. Add a coat of wood preservative to keep the timber in good condition. Choose your colour with care – simply changing the shade of the preservative can quickly transform the appearance of your fence. Remember that lighter shades will make the garden seem longer, while darker shades will shorten it. If you feel creative, try varying the shades so as to lighten it towards the end of the garden.
